Foggy Flower
The Fog Flower is a humidifier thats meant to blend into your home decor. You water it as if it were a plant and watch short plumes of mist shoot up from its spout. There’s enough space in there to eject 3 to 4 hours worth of vapor and on days when you don’t need to use it, stick a flow in it. Designer: Dong-Kuk Nam
Sony gets a SidekickI said it before and I’ll say it again; design mash-ups are fun. Take this latest concept by Samuel Lau. He has blended together a Sidekick Mobile phone with a PSP Slim. Why? Because he can. Looks pretty decent and features a 3.2 megapixel cam round back, full frontal webcam action and the most notable aspect. a slide-up QWERTY keyboard! I say while we are at it, why not add motion sensors, a touch screen and geo-tracking to help find and connect with other PSPers. And I want $50,000 in dimes, a get-away car and the letter M stricken from the English alphabet. You hear me SONY!? Designer: Samuel Lau

iSlands pod lifeLet’s face it, we are running out of really good beaches as fast as you can say Hilton. The days of dreaming about saving up for a lovely beach side retirement home are going the way of affordable gas and decent public libraries in America. But designer Vicente Guallart sees the less attractive coastlines of the world as an opportunity to add new appeal in the form of these “Microcoasts” hexagonal wooden islands. I am not sure the use of wood is the best material for our sobered environmental reality or how well this wood will hold up against the harsh seaside elements. It is pretty to look at though. I’m going to imagine I have a huge house with an expansive yard and every big yard needs seating, so instead of the normal 4 legs that make up a chair, I get the Twist, a chair with a corkscrew base. Yes, just twist it down into the ground until it’s stable and sit at your heart’s content. Sure it’s a little impractical but have a sense of humor will ya? Just be careful not to spin in it or you’ll end up in China. Designer: Nick Ross
That Warm Cozy Feeling…
You are sitting at home. You have your favorite show recorded ready to go and your favorite take-out was just delivered. It’s a cold, grey night outside but you are crinkling your toes like a kitten on weed. You are about as cozy as you can be and thanks to your good design sense and ability to create your perfect habitat. Well Bumrae Jo & Zemzem Kaya want to be a contributing factor in your perfect dwelling moments. They have designed the dreadfully named “Bezpieczenstwo - Feeling secure” radiator design that hopes to reinforce your nesting tendencies by creating…well something that looks like a nest in a tree. They even threw in an incubating egg that acts as a humidifier. Designer: Bumrae Jo & Zemzem Kaya
Texts from the designer: Heat…what does it mean to us? What do we associate it with? For a moment we tried to leave the artefact ‘radiator’ behind us and concentrate on what is ‘radiated’ and how it affects us physically and emotionally. In other words, the design approach taken by us has a more meaningful searching character and we sought to apply our thoughts to a new shape. The warmness of the home is creating space for our personal development, a shelter to grow, to unfold and to ‘flower’. It’s like an incubator, like a NEST where new life has its origin.
